Application Process

The General Practice National Recruitment Office (GPNRO) co-ordinates the process for recruitment to General Practice (GP) Specialty Training Programmes. Recruitment to GP Specialty Training will take place three times a year, twice for August commencement and once for February commencement. Round 1 and Round 1 Re-advert cover August commencement; Round 2 covers February commencement. For details of how to apply please click here.

Process to apply for GP Training

Eligibility Check - GMC registration (provisional/full) - Completion (expected) of Foundation Programme (UK) or equivalent - Right to work - Pass the multi-specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA, computer-based test)

Registration on Oriel - Create an account - Personal and professional details

Application window - Aug starters (Round 1) Oct-Nov - Feb starter (Round 2) Apr-May - Complete an online application form

Booking and sitting the MSRA - Once application meets basic criteria, you’ll be invited to book MSRA - MSRA score determines short-listing and ranking

Preference selection - Rank preferred regions or programmes

Offers - Based on MSRA score and preference, you may be matched to a training programme - If successful, an offer will be made via Oriel.

Pre-employment checks - Once offer accepted the Lead Employer will contact to check: Occupational health References Right to work/visa DBS check

Start GP training - Either in August or February - Invitation to the programme's induction - Meet peers and educators

Process after offer has been accepted

You'll be matched to our programme.

NHSE will contact our programme and inform us of new starters in April (August starters) or October (February starters).

We then your details and work experience to plan your placements from ST1-ST3.

During this period, you can apply for Less than Full Time (LTFT) via this link. You have 16 weeks' notice to give.

Once we have set up your tracks, we will share your first placement allocation with the deanery. The deanery will then inform the Lead Employer, who will inform the host organisation.

The Lead Employer will then notify you of your next placement.

Prior to the start of training, we will assign you with an Educational Supervisor (ES). Your ES will be there to support you throughout your training. Make sure to contact them to arrange your first meeting.

During this time, you should receive notification of your induction date with your placements and contact details from the host organisation.

The training programme or admin will send out a welcome email prior to the start of training with an invitation to your first teaching session.
